Why Use Social Media As A Marketing Tool?

I read an article this week that made my jaw drop! It talked about how 64% of small businesses don’t think social media is important. What?! If this is the case, this means these business aren’t incorporating social media into their marketing strategy. My only caveat: there was a small sampling of business owners, and stats can always be misconstrued. However, these stats are alarming, sample size and industry aside, so I was compelled to discuss.

I could write a thesis on the value of social media but neither of use has time for that. I will give you a some answers to help bridge the social media divide, from the perspective of a person who started a marketing career before the age of the internet and social media, back when we used phone books, land lines, and unannounced drop-ins to prospect for clients. <I see you looking at my pic trying to guess my age>

So what’s wrong with this notion that social media is not important? Understand the correlation between “traditional” marketing and social media as a marketing tool:

  • Small businesses look for inexpensive ways to communicate their products to the public. If you have time to market your business, you have the resources you need to use social media. You can use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogs, etc. and shell out $0 monetary costs. Don’t believe me? Ask me and I’ll show you.
  • Small businesses thrive on word of mouth marketing. Social media is the most organic form of word of mouth marketing there is. The whole point of social media is to build your street credibility through word of mouth. That’s why you can message, repost, retweet, comment and share, it’s all about communication, no physical boundaries required!
  • When you run a business and marketing is not your strength, you usually hire someone for marketing, correct? This marketing person usually teaches you some tips and tricks you can use on a daily basis, and then they build the bigger marketing plans and strategies. So why are you not using your hired marketing person to understand social media?
  • Your brand is your image. It doesn’t matter what you think of your image, it matters what your clients think of your image. What does your brand, your image, look like when it’s stuck in the twentieth century? I’ll let you ponder that for a moment.

So why am I disturbed by the statistics of small business owners who refuse to adopt current marketing practices? Because they are missing out on a huge opportunity to catapult their businesses to the next level. Because small businesses provide a big chunk of the private sector jobs in this country. Because I recognize that small businesses are the life blood of our economy. This is no secret! Thus it is very important, not only to me but to us, for small businesses to stay strong, adapt to a changing business climate, and rebuild our country.

Know a small business that’s falling by the wayside because of their inability to adapt new, broader means of communication to grow their business? I will almost bet it’s because they don’t understand the value of using social media. I just have one favor to ask of you: email this post to your fellow business owners that have this notion, since they’re probably not regularly using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, blogs, etc. so they won’t see it online. Or better yet, print this post and drop it in snail mail if you can actually find a postage stamp.

3 Quick Tips for Marketing With Paper.li

We’ve introduced paper.li and what it’s useful for. Now I want to dig a bit deeper and suggest 3 simple ways you can use your paper.li newspaper as a marketing tool.   

1. Promote people you follow. I’ve notice people will often retweet my paper.li tweets when they’re mentioned in the “today’s top stories via” tweet, and I do the same. It’s a nice way to give a mention, and it lets people know you’re paying attention to their tweets. Who wouldn’t like that?

2. Provide a content source that directly relates to your industry, thereby demonstrating your understanding of the power players in your industry. For example, I’m in marketing – a rather extensive industry. So instead of creating a “Marketing Daily”, I created a niche paper called Social Media Minds that’s a compilation of the social media managers and marketers I follow. I follow them, they get to see me, and we build an online rapport. It’s that simple. Next I just might create a paper.li entitled “Brand Builders” or something along those lines, based on a list of branding experts, yet another niche within the marketing industry. Be creative and apply this concept to your own industry!

3. Show your personality. Who says it has to be all business? If the whole point of our revolutionized marketing industry is predicated on building relationships, why not show off your personality a bit? You can do this by creating specific lists that interest you  on a personal level (think cars, sports, music, etc.) or by simply giving your paper.li a funky name. There are millions of Twitter users, you can certainly find people who tweet about things you like. Your image/personality/uniqueness can shine through your paper.li, putting you one step closer to your goal of unique branding.

Bonus: You just might look like you’re on the ball with social media when you incorporate different platforms and apps into your profile. Definitely a professional win-win wouldn’t you say?

Is paper.li for everyone? I don’t think so – I’ve read various articles about people who dislike paper.li, who think users are too lazy to create original content blah blah blah… However, as with any new concept, you can think about your industry, your interests, and decide if paper.li works for you. I’ve learned to mix personal and professional interests on Twitter and paper.li is an easy way to catch the highlights in my Twitter stream. Quite frankly, it doesn’t have to be that deep, but it should be fun. Hence the term “social” media.

Quick Tip: Stay In The Know With Paper.li

Do you publish a paper.li newspaper? If not, do you subscribe to someone else’s paper.li? If you’re scratching your head wondering what I’m talking about, a paper.li is a free service that basically takes links from the people you follow on Twitter and organizes the links into a virtual newspaper.  You can create your own paper.li based on a list, hashtag, a user, or a custom setting with advanced features.  Once you choose your source, you can name your paper and set it to generate daily or weekly and receive the latest editions via email. Just like a newspaper, there are sections for Headlines, Business, Arts & Entertainment, etc. and popular hashtags.

So go ahead and create your own paper.li newspaper or subscribe to one you like. I’m sure you follow someone who has a paper.li you’ll find interesting (hint hint). I particularly like paper.li because it keeps me in the know when I don’t have time to “check in” with Twitter often. I can read a newspaper and stay up-to-date on the day’s topics. I currently publish 3 newspapers, feel free to read and/or subscribe to stay in the know!

3 Quick Tips To Inspire Your Blog Pipeline

Feeling a bit of irony here. I’m tweaking the blog and rummaging through all the different blog topics I have. It’s hard to choose just one to settle on, but I’m overdue on a post. So what better way to answer the “what to blog about” question than to share 3 quick tips to keep your blog pipeline full of ideas:

1. Subscribe to your favorite business related blogs, either via RSS or email. If you keep up with current discussion points, particularly as they relate to your industry, your blog topics will remain relevant. Face it, nobody wants to read old “breaking” news on your blog.  You can’t brand yourself as an “expert” if you’re showing up late to the party.

2. Make a specific web folder, bookmark a variety of blogs and websites, and check them weekly for updates. They don’t all have to be industry-specific. You can include general purpose sites that make you laugh, think, and ignite your creative juices.

3. Pick up a newspaper. No I’m not kidding. When you read the latest news, it can spur a slew of ideas that you can relate to your blog’s central theme. I subscribe to my local business newspaper – both in print and online – and I can find something interesting to write about every day. Now to actually set aside time to write every day, but that’s another subject.

For relatively new bloggers (like myself) the notion of writing a couple posts a week can be daunting. So make it easier on yourself and adopt these quick tips to make sure you have an arsenal of blogging subjects to choose from. Of course I actually use all three tips and then some. I only preach what I practice!

3 Quick Tips For Using RSS For Business

Ever been puzzled by this little orange symbol that appears on blogs and websites?


And why should your business be using RSS feed anyway?

If you are in business of any kind, here’s 3 quick tips for using RSS feed to subscribe to websites and blogs to help your business.

1. It provides one neat place to keep track of updated content from your favorite sites. No more surfing individual sites for content. aka time-saver

2. Makes industry research a much simpler task. Keep up on trending topics by following the leading sites, experts and authorities in your industry. aka easy-research

3. Your clients/potential clients can subscribe to your updates if you give them the RSS feed option. Not everyone wants to share their email address to receive your newsletters. But they still want to keep up with your content. aka non-intrusive

BONUS TIP:  Site owners can see subscribers, so think beyond the basic orange button. Think synergy, sales, and relationship building. If you have the RSS feed option on your site, you may be building a potential client base without realizing it. Think about it: there’s a reason I’m subscribing to your site.

I Want To StumbleUpon Your Site

I read an eye-opening article about the power of StumbleUpon as a referral source to boost your social media traffic. Did you know it has surpassed Facebook as the largest shared source of traffic? How many of you use StumbleUpon to drive traffic to your site? I just started using it recently and it’s quite interesting. I’ve seen the symbol and little “I like it” hand at the top of toolbars as I view articles on the web, but I didn’t fully understand its impact until I started learning the stats.

If you are new to StumbleUpon or haven’t incorporated it into your social media strategy, check out this StumbleUpon 101 to get started! You can set up a personal profile, receive recommendations based on your interests, and you can index your own articles and blog posts. You can also find your friends (via Facebook or email addresses) to see what they’ve stumbled upon. There’s tagging options when you “discover” a new article to StumbleUpon, etc…the list of options is too long to describe here.  As you can see, there’s a great opportunity to sync your StumbleUpon profile with your business in order to increase your ranking and drive traffic to your site.

Bottom line: Don’t rely on a single social media source to drive traffic to your site. You need to incorporate different social media platforms to build a comprehensive online presence for your business.

You Are Your Brand, Own It!

I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic social media seminar, dubbed an Online Marketing & Social Media Crash Course, featuring none other than Entrepreneur Magazine expert Starr Hall.  Now since I already know Starr I was prepared to be blown away by all her proven tips to navigate the online marketing environment. For those of you that don’t her, let me tell you she is indeed an expert!

My friend and event attendee Author Brian L Thompson asked me a question after the event that really had me stumped. He asked me “What was THE most important thing I learned? And what am I going to do with it?” The nerve of him asking me such a loaded question right?! After giving some it some thought, I answered: I think the most significant takeaway for me is that I AM THE BRAND. My personality must resonate in everything I do, so I’m working on adjusting all my communications – social media and otherwise – to accurately reflect my brand.

Why am I sharing this? As business owners, we spend so much time making our clients look fabulous that we often neglect our own businesses in the process – don’t despair because I’m guilty too! As it relates to branding and communication, part of this stems from traditional marketing tactics. You see, before the age of transparency via the internet and social media, too many of us were taught to NOT put a personal spin on our communications, thus we would write a bunch of stodgy copy for our marketing collateral. Great design elements, but the copy would either bore you to sleep or be too sales-pushy. Unfortunately, many of us still accidentally succumb to this traditional ideology and it hinders our success – again, call me guilty. As I pondered my most significant takeaway from the event, all of the tips and tricks I learned are rooted in the understanding that it’s okay for me to let my personality shine through as I build my brand. My personality, my uniqueness,  is what you buy, not my degrees or brochures! Ok, maybe you buy my degrees but you know what I mean!

What makes this so ironic is that Janice Clark, one of my tweeps and mentors, pointed this very thing out to me a couple weeks ago. Anytime I try to hide my personality I bomb, as in no “hits”, no feedback, no inquiries = no sales. So how timely is it that I attended this seminar while I am in the midst of making drastic updates to my online persona? Sometimes timing is everything isn’t it? If you’re reading this post I’d dare to guess the same lesson applies for your business – YOU ARE YOUR BRAND!

I could write a thesis on all the things I learned from Starr during this seminar, but you need to check her out for yourself… Seriously though, I am thankful to know people like Brian, Starr, Janice and my tons of business friends for asking me loaded questions and forcing me to think and ACT on strategies to build my business. Remember, you are judged by the company you keep, and  I happen to choose my company carefully. After all, I AM MY BRAND!
