10 Quick Twitter Tips

Need a little more twitter-savvy? Use these quick tips and have fun!

  1. Save hashtags you like. I save them for offline events and tweetchats so I can go back and review the discussions I like. Think of it as building your own transcript.
  2. Build lists so you can target specific tweeters, and make sure you have lists for local tweeps, tweeps in your industry, and target clients to start. Lists will make a big difference as your following and timeline grow. Want to use an automated list builder? Try Formulists.
  3. You already know to get rid of that egg pic. Use a human picture, not a logo. Logos can’t tweet and we want to know who we’re talking to. Make sure it looks like you. Suppose we cross paths? I want to recognize you.
  4. Use your location in your bio. You’ll be found when people perform searches more often.
  5. Complete your bio – otherwise you’ll look like spam. Make it keyword rich too. Again, people perform searches to find interesting people to follow. Can you make sure your bio somewhat relates to what you tweet about?
  6. Tweet in 120 characters and you’ll increase your chance of being retweeted. You’re leaving room for a person to retweet and/or include a comment.
  7. Some people just tweet sales pitches, and we don’t like it. So don’t do it. Engagement is the name of the game.
  8. Don’t go backwards in your timeline. For the most part it’s a waste of time. Want to know why? Read my previous post on this.
  9. Don’t autofollow people simply because they’re following you. Not a good strategy if you’re on here to engage for business. Find people with whom you would like to engage, be proactive.
  10. Post at different times of the day to increase your visibility. We’re all in different time zones, regions and countries. If this is problematic for you, consider scheduling tweets throughout the day.

Quick Tip: Stay In The Know With Paper.li

Do you publish a paper.li newspaper? If not, do you subscribe to someone else’s paper.li? If you’re scratching your head wondering what I’m talking about, a paper.li is a free service that basically takes links from the people you follow on Twitter and organizes the links into a virtual newspaper.  You can create your own paper.li based on a list, hashtag, a user, or a custom setting with advanced features.  Once you choose your source, you can name your paper and set it to generate daily or weekly and receive the latest editions via email. Just like a newspaper, there are sections for Headlines, Business, Arts & Entertainment, etc. and popular hashtags.

So go ahead and create your own paper.li newspaper or subscribe to one you like. I’m sure you follow someone who has a paper.li you’ll find interesting (hint hint). I particularly like paper.li because it keeps me in the know when I don’t have time to “check in” with Twitter often. I can read a newspaper and stay up-to-date on the day’s topics. I currently publish 3 newspapers, feel free to read and/or subscribe to stay in the know!

3 Quick Tips To Inspire Your Blog Pipeline

Feeling a bit of irony here. I’m tweaking the blog and rummaging through all the different blog topics I have. It’s hard to choose just one to settle on, but I’m overdue on a post. So what better way to answer the “what to blog about” question than to share 3 quick tips to keep your blog pipeline full of ideas:

1. Subscribe to your favorite business related blogs, either via RSS or email. If you keep up with current discussion points, particularly as they relate to your industry, your blog topics will remain relevant. Face it, nobody wants to read old “breaking” news on your blog.  You can’t brand yourself as an “expert” if you’re showing up late to the party.

2. Make a specific web folder, bookmark a variety of blogs and websites, and check them weekly for updates. They don’t all have to be industry-specific. You can include general purpose sites that make you laugh, think, and ignite your creative juices.

3. Pick up a newspaper. No I’m not kidding. When you read the latest news, it can spur a slew of ideas that you can relate to your blog’s central theme. I subscribe to my local business newspaper – both in print and online – and I can find something interesting to write about every day. Now to actually set aside time to write every day, but that’s another subject.

For relatively new bloggers (like myself) the notion of writing a couple posts a week can be daunting. So make it easier on yourself and adopt these quick tips to make sure you have an arsenal of blogging subjects to choose from. Of course I actually use all three tips and then some. I only preach what I practice!

Learning Across the Globe From Your Comfy Chair

If there’s a subject you’re interested in,  you more than likely do a quick search online to find out details, right? You can apply the same principle to your ongoing business education. With so many social media platforms launching on a regular basis, you can easily stay abreast of hot topics in your industry from your comfy chair. Here’s 4 quick methods you can use to stay current with your industry’s trending topics:

  • Virtual trade shows – This concept is gaining in popularity, and it’s a great way to hear industry-related speakers and topics in one place without the travel expense.
  • Online events, such as webinars, tweetchats, and facebook chats.  I attend at least a couple of these weekly to keep current on trending topics and stay in touch with colleagues and competitors. Did you know many webinar hosts will provide a recording of their webinar if you pre-register?
  • LinkedIn Groups – there is a wealth of industry specific information being shared right now on LinkedIn. Become a member of relevant LinkedIn groups, subscribe to receive updates, and participate in the discussions.
  • Read websites/blogs that relate to your field and subscribe to their RSS Feed. It’s like building an online textbook one article at a time.

Making It Work:  Add these events and activities to your calendar the same as you would if they were in person. 

Did you notice there are no physical boundaries with any of the above mentioned methods? One hour I might be chatting with someone in Australia, the next hour I’m watching a presentation in Canada. Don’t limit yourself or your business!  Just because you’re already established or done with school doesn’t mean the learning is over. Join global conversations, stay current, and ensure your piece of the profit. You can literally get an international education from the comfort of your home.

3 Quick Tips For Using RSS For Business

Ever been puzzled by this little orange symbol that appears on blogs and websites?


And why should your business be using RSS feed anyway?

If you are in business of any kind, here’s 3 quick tips for using RSS feed to subscribe to websites and blogs to help your business.

1. It provides one neat place to keep track of updated content from your favorite sites. No more surfing individual sites for content. aka time-saver

2. Makes industry research a much simpler task. Keep up on trending topics by following the leading sites, experts and authorities in your industry. aka easy-research

3. Your clients/potential clients can subscribe to your updates if you give them the RSS feed option. Not everyone wants to share their email address to receive your newsletters. But they still want to keep up with your content. aka non-intrusive

BONUS TIP:  Site owners can see subscribers, so think beyond the basic orange button. Think synergy, sales, and relationship building. If you have the RSS feed option on your site, you may be building a potential client base without realizing it. Think about it: there’s a reason I’m subscribing to your site.

Twitter Is For Right Now – Not Yesterday!

There are many articles that tell you how little time it takes to use social media. Yet, if you’re a relatively new user, this will sound like hogwash! It can take several hours to understand how to use just one social media platform. However, once you’re up and running,  your time spent can be drastically reduced. You’d be amazed at how the pros manage their time using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogs, etc. There really is a method to the “spend 20 minutes a day” advice you hear out there. Today’s quick tip is an invaluable lesson I learned several months ago from Warriorpreneur Ann Evanston:

When using Twitter, don’t go backwards in your timeline to get caught up. 

When you open Twitter, depending on which platform you’re using (Hootsuite, iPhone, etc.), it usually opens to the exact time period you last viewed. The problem is that this could be several hours (or days) ago. When I was a newbie, I’d scroll through old tweets to get caught up and it was a complete waste of time! It takes too long, and Twitter is about as live and “real time” as it gets with social media. You are essentially catching up on old news, and if you start reading and retweeting from too many hours (or days) back, you’ll never catch up to the most recent tweets! You’ll miss all the current news, or worse, the conversation will have already ended and you’ll show up loud and late! For the most part, if I’m “behind” in my timeline I scroll forward to tweets within the past 60 minutes or so, UNLESS I’m performing a specific search. This one little tip made a HUGE difference in my understanding and use of Twitter, so I thought I’d share the advice.

Are Networking Mixers A Waste Of Time?

Before you get all defensive, I know plenty of people swear by the networking mixer as a great way to cast a wide net and meet a bunch of potential clients. As a general rule I don’t attend these types of events unless I have a purpose. Mingling by itself is not a purpose; I mean a defined (often quantifiable) objective.

What prompted this post? I recently attended the worst networking mixer ever! I mean poor sound quality, multiple presenters just pitched and offered nothing of value, no traffic flow or structure within a huge lounge space, and… the attendees didn’t actually network. I went to meet a friend (and future client), and we both wanted to learn more about the hosting organization. My friend and I actually had a great time together. Unfortunately I noticed something awkward about the rest of the people there. I thought I’d have a little fun and show him why I’m so “particular” about attending networking events and adamant about having clear objectives if I choose to attend.

We both sat back and observed everyone’s behavior, as a social experiment of sorts. Then, I would go up to people and intentionally not offer my name or biz, but start a conversation with a “What’s your name?” or a “What do you do?” – and would you believe not a single person reciprocated? Yes, it was that bad! To make matters worse, my friend knew several people there and they all failed my test as well. Needless to say, he was stunned! But now he understands why I’m so strategic in spending my time and resources as I build my business. Running around to go to a bunch of events for the sake of going is simply not an option for most small business owners, a lesson he clearly understood after this experiment. I never did find any movers and shakers there to talk business. 

On the flip side, I attended an unrelated mixer a couple of weeks later because I wanted to meet and get to know a particular person that I chatted with a couple of months ago online. I had a fantastic and productive time at this mixer! Not only did I meet this person, but the attendees were engaging, lively, and prepared to socialize and talk business. Of course there were a couple of duds, but I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the interactions all around me.

Today’s Lesson: Do not attend a networking mixer without a clear objective. The challenge with networking mixers is that so many people go to say they’re pulling long hours, working so hard to meet prospects and trying to make sales. In reality, they’re going to have hors d’oeuvres and cocktails!
